John Elliott
East of England
I am Emeritus Professor of Education in the Centre for Applied Research in Education (CARE) at the University of East Anglia. I am a former Director of CARE and Dean of Education, as well as a past President ofthe British Educational Research Association and the World Association of Lesson Studies (WALS). Currently I am the Chief Editor of the International Journal of Lesson and Learning Studies, the official journal of WALS.
I have an international reputation for my pioneering role in developing the theory and practice of action research as an approach for sustainable educational change. I founded a collaborative action research international network (CARN), which extends across the professions. I served as a consultant to the OECD's 'Environment and School Initiatives' Network and successfully led international curriculum development for local environmental change.
I was co-leader of a new national police training curriculum (1989), and co-directed a review of the Police Learning Requirement for the Home Office (2001-2003).
My work for educational change through action research was recognised by the award of a D.Litt degree (UEA) on the basis of my published work, and Honorary doctorates at the Hong Kong Institute of Education and the Autonomous University of Barcelona. This year I was made an Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences (AcSS).
I have participated in school governing bodies and currently am a community governor of a Secondary School in Norwich working in challenging circumstances. From 2001-2007 I served on the Norfolk Learning and Skills Council and until 2009 represented Higher Education on Norfolk's multi-stakeholder 14-19 Strategy Group. At the national level I play an active role in influencing government policy through the New Vision Group, which regularly addresses educational policy issues with Ministers and Civil Servants.
Currently I am an elected member of the RSA's Fellowship Council and convene the Norwich Fellows' Education Forum.
