RSA Thursday

In his recent Commons statement on the publication of Lord Browne's review of higher education funding, Business Secretary Vince Cable said Labour’s 50% target for HE participation had been “a mistake”.

In a radically changed economic climate can we still afford such a target? Or in these most challenging economic circumstances is it even more important that we produce the highly-skilled knowledge based workers to allow us to compete in the global market?

Has widening access has afforded better life chances for many but also contributed to the devaluing of a degree’s worth and the growing gap in practical skills?.

How do we ensure that disadvantaged groups are not priced out higher education & access remains fair? Or are the dreams they are being sold overstated & misunderstood?"

Join an expert panel at the RSA to debate whether we should be radically rethinking access to higher education - how many should go, who should pay and how much?

Speakers to include: Graeme Atherton, director of the aimhigher WECAN London Partnership; John Philpott, chief economist, CIPD; Ryan Wain, president, Kings College London SU & NUS National Executive and Peter Mitchell, chief executive, The Baker Dearing Educational Trust.
