Slash and burn farming generates more carbon emissions annually than all air and road travel put together. The practice sits at the crossroads of two of the greatest threats to global stability: accelerating climate change and diminishing food security.Up In Smoke follows British scientist Mike Hands, who has laboured for 25 years to find a solution to replacing slash and burn agriculture in equatorial rainforests.
Filmed over 4 years in Honduras and in the UK, the film parallels the farmers’ struggles with Mike Hands’ attempts to get heavyweight political backing at the 2009 Copenhagen Summit. But is the world ready to listen?
There will be a panel discussion following the screening with Adam Wakeling, director, Up in Smoke, Mike Hands, ecologist and John Vidal, environment editor, The Guardian.
Up in Smoke is part of the More 4 ‘True Stories’ strand: commissioning and showcasing the best of international documentary filmmaking. Every Tuesday at 10pm
