A celebration of ageing and the human journey
Reflecting the vitality of an Olympic year, we consider life like a Marathon, presenting the latest scientific thinking about increasing human longevity in terms of trends, training and persistence.
Acclaimed scientists outline what research is revealing about how and why we age: Sarah Harper, director, Oxford Institute of Population Ageing on 'The Longest Lives in History'; Ian Deary, director, Centre for Cognitive Ageing, Edinburgh on 'Staying Fit and Keeping Well'; Tom Kirkwood, dean for ageing, Institute for Ageing and Health, Newcastle, on 'Hitting the Wall and Approaching the Finish'; with responses from culture and sport from Professor Frances Corner, head of the London College of Fashion and triple Olympian Simon Mason.
This event complements the concurrent exhibition
Coming of Age: the Art and Science of Ageing
At GV Art, London
Inspired by Newcastle University’s Changing Age campaign, which seeks to challenge the negative perceptions about older people in society, Coming of Age uses art to explore the effects and experience of ageing through the eyes of both artists and scientists
