RSA Screens with Channel 4
In 2011, whilst embedded with the US army in Afghanistan, photographer Giles Duley stepped on an IED – the explosion left him a triple amputee. Despite almost losing his life and spending the last 18 months undergoing a gruelling recovery process, Giles’s determination to help others has not been dented and he continues to work.An upcoming Channel 4 documentary explores Giles’s inspirational story and follows his courageous return to Afghanistan to document civilians facing a life with injuries like his own, but who do not have the medical resources or prosthetic technology he has received.
Editor of The Observer John Mulholland, Kabul-based Emanuele Nannini of Italian charity Emergency and Giles Duley discuss the film and the wider legacy of the Afghan war, including the tens of thousands of civilians who have been traumatically injured and have lost limbs to IEDs and landmines.
The screening will be followed by a drinks reception and a private view of Giles Duley’s photography.
Walking Wounded: Return to the Frontline is on Channel 4, February 21 at 10pm.
