In the week that Parliament reconvenes, controversial cartoonist Martin Rowson visits the RSA to discuss his career as a ‘visual journalist’ and to trace the intriguing history of the political cartoon.

Rowson’s style is visceral and deliberately provocative, and he sees himself following in the tradition of eighteenth-century satirists and cartoonists, such as Gillray. How has cartooning and satirical art influenced political culture and public opinion in the past, and what is its status today?
