Does pain always end happiness? Is suffering the opposite of wellbeing? You might think so, given the way that pleasure and positive feelings are emphasised in contemporary visions of the good life. And yet, anyone who has suffered, for example, the loss of someone they love knows that loss can bring closeness like nothing else.
Difficulties often make one feel alive. Can a deeper understanding of the experience of pain be the key to a meaningful life?
With author and philosopher Mark Vernon, Raymond Tallis, Professor of Geriatric Medicine and Dr Havi Carel, Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at University of West England.
