Martin Sutherland
Martin Sutherland has been Chief Executive of Royal & Derngate, Northampton for three years having spent the previous four years as Director of The Corn Exchange & New Greenham Arts in Newbury, Berkshire. Prior to this Martin worked as an independent producer and general manager, touring over 50 theatre, comedy and circus productions throughout the UK and internationally. Early career was spent working with commercial theatre producers, including Elton John's Rocket Theatre on West End and Broadway musicals.
Martin is a Trustee of Oxford Playhouse, Unlimited Theatre, and The Malcolm Arnold Society and a Fellow of the RSA.
Royal & Derngate was recently designated "Regional Theatre of the Year" by The Stage, recognising the diverse nature of the programming, the work with young people and families and the quality of the in-house produced work, all Made in Northampton. In 2010 both Spring Storm and Beyond the Horizon transferred to the National Theatre and End of the Rainbow opened in the West End, where it continues to run. Last year over 400,000 audience members saw Royal & Derngate produced or presented shows in Northampton and on tour.
In the last year the management team from Royal & Derngate has developed a new organisation, Northamptonshire Arts Management Trust, to deliver finance, administration, sales, marketing, human resources, IT, programming and management services – for both Royal & Derngate and a new theatre, The Core at Corby Cube that opened in November 2010.
