Candace Allen

A native of New England, Candace Allen became the first African-American female member of the Directors Guild of America after graduating from Harvard and attending the New York University School of Film and Television.   Moving to Los Angeles, she worked as an Assistant Director on feature and television films and later as a screenwriter.

During her time in Los Angeles, Ms. Allen was a founding member and leader of Reel Black Women, a professional organization for African-American women in film, as well as setting up and for four years continuing a counselling group for young black women at Jordan High School in Watts.

Ms Allen has been a resident of London since 1994.  Her first novel, Valaida, based on the life of entertainer and jazz trumpeter Valaida Snow, was published in the U.K. by the Virago Press in January 2004.  Work on her second novel has taken very much of  a back seat in the past year to her active support of Barack Obama as a principal of American Abroad for Obama, London.  She spent a week volunteering in New Hampshire prior to that state’s January 8th primary and posts intermittently on her website, www.blackexpat4obama.com.
