Naaz Coker

Naaz Coker is a trustee of the RSA and chair of St George’s Healthcare NHS Trust.

Naaz Coker’s career in the public and voluntary sectors spans thirty five years; she is currently the Chair of St George’s Healthcare NHS Trust, which has at its heart St. George’s Hospital, one of London’s premier undergraduate teaching hospitals.

In September 2007, she was appointed Chair of Shelter, the housing and homelessness charity and from 1998 to 2006, she was the Chair of the British Refugee Council, a large charitable organisation providing services and promoting the rights of refugees and asylum seekers in the UK and abroad. Currently she is also a trustee of the RSA and Council member of St George’s University of London. She has written widely on racism and ethnic health inequalities in the NHS and the plight of refugees and asylum seekers in the West.

She was awarded ‘Asian Woman of the Year in 2000, 2003 and winner of the ‘Asian Woman of Achievement’ award in the Public Sector category in 2004. She was awarded honorary doctorate degrees by Leeds Metropolitan University in 2005 and the University of Central England in 2007.

Naaz grew up in Tanzania and completed her University studies in the UK. She graduated in 1971 with an Honours degree in Pharmacy and in 1974 she gained a Master’s degree from the University of London. She completed her MBA in 1991 and also runs her own executive coaching practice.
