Lorne L Dawson is Professor of Sociology at University of Waterloo.
Lorne's primary area of research has been new religious movements, with a specific focus in recent years on why some new religions become violent, the nature and role of charismatic authority, and the debate over how groups respond to the failure of prophecy. He has also done research on the social and cultural significance of new religions and religion and the Internet. Work on the factors leading to violence in new religions has lead to a new research interest in the process of radicalization in terrorist groups, in particular so-called homegrown terrorists.
