David Eagleman is a
neuroscientist at Baylor College of Medicine, where he is faculty in the
Departments of Neuroscience and Psychiatry. He is the Director of BCM’s
Initiative on Neuroscience and
Law, which studies how new discoveries in neuroscience will modify
the way we make laws, punish criminals, and develop rehabilitation. The
Initiative brings together a unique collaboration of neurobiologists, legal
scholars, and policy makers, with the goal of building modern, evidence-based
policy.
Dr. Eagleman is the
author of 2 recent books: Sum
(Canongate Books) and Wednesday is Indigo
Blue: Discovering the Brain of Synesthesia (MIT Press). Two more of
his books will be released in the coming year: Dethronement: The Secret Life of the Unconscious
Brain (Pantheon Books) and Plasticity: The Secrets of the Dynamically
Reorganizing Brain (Oxford University Press). His scientific
discoveries have been featured on the Discovery Channel, History Channel, BBC,
ABC and PBS, and in print media such as Discover Magazine, Wired, Scientific
American, Seed Magazine and New Scientist.
He earned his
undergraduate degree in British and American Literature at Rice University, with a junior year
abroad at Oxford. He obtained his
Ph.D. in Neuroscience at Baylor College of Medicine, followed by a postdoctoral
fellowship at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies.
