Tara-Jane Herbert
is the Artistic Director of Dance United.

Having trained with the renowned William Louther, from the Graham Dance Company and then at the Rambert School, Tara embarked on a performance career spanning eight years, dancing with companies including Dance Theatre Red and Dance and Theatre Corporation, the latter headed by her mentor William Louther.

Tara’s teaching career spans 18 years and includes major performing arts colleges across London and women’s prisons in the UK. Tara also trained 18 former street children in Ethiopia, who are now professional dancers, choreographers and teachers.

Choreographic and directing includes work for The Royal Shakespeare Company, work performed at the Dome and The Royal Albert Hall, and various pieces created and
performed in UK prisons. She headed the four-year Breaking Barriers programme in female institutions. Projects abroad include work with refugees and street children in Indonesia, Italy and Brazil with the David Glass Ensemble. Tara co-choreographed Stravinsky’s Firebird with 200 young people, 25 senior citizens, Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.

In 2009, Tara choreographed Full Circle with Susannah Broughton, an intergenerational epic of 130 dancers drawn from six diverse groups across London and Yorkshire and consisting of many people who had never danced before. This piece formed part of a trilogy performed in the Destino programme on the main stage of Sadler’s Wells Theatre, alongside work by Hofesh Shechter, Russell Maliphant and Adam Benjamin.
