Director Jonathan Smith began his career in the BBC’s documentary department 18 years ago, where he worked for a decade before becoming a freelance filmmaker.
Throughout his career he has made numerous high-profile programmes, including producing and directing two films of the series The Trust in 2001. The Trust followed the modernisation of the National Health Service and the life of its staff and patients, based at Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham and won a BAFTA, the Huw Weldon Award for Specialist Factual and the Grierson Award for best documentary series.
In 2005 Jonathan’s film Make Me Normal, about children with Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome in an inner city London school, won the BAFTA 2006 Flaherty Award for Single Documentary and the RTS Behind the Screen Breakthrough Award 2006 for best director.
