Andy Thornton is the chief executive of The Citizenship Foundation.
Andy moved to the Foundation after three years at the Giving Campaign where he initiated their youth stream, Giving Nation.
Giving Nation and the primary school version Go Givers are now part of our partnership with the Office of the Third Sector at the Cabinet Office. They are the country’s leading programmes for supporting young people’s informed engagement with charities and community action.
Andy served on the Advisory Board for the government’s ground breaking commission into youth volunteering, The Russell Commission. He has recently led the Foundation’s partnership with the British Council, helping to develop and test a new global Active Citizens programme. He also heads up the development of the Council for Education in Global Citizenship which has moved to the Foundation.
Prior to this Andy managed a charity himself: Greenbelt Festivals operating with 5 staff and 1,500 volunteers and hosting an annual green-field music festival for 10,000 campers. Before that Andy headed up the youth team of the Greater Glasgow Health Board’s Health Promotion Unit, where he developed innovative practices in peer education and curricular activities with young people in areas of poverty. This followed 6 years as a youth worker and Area Adviser for the Church of Scotland Board of Education with intermittent time off to be a full time rock musician.
