Paul Vallely is associate editor of the Independent and a leading British writer on ethical, cultural and political issues.

He has worked as a theatre critic, war reporter, religious commentator, foreign correspondent and leader writer. He has been chair of the Catholic Institute for International Relations, has worked with CAFOD and Christian Aid and been an editorial adviser to the Catholic Bishops Conference of England and Wales. He was awarded a CMG in 2006 for services to journalism and to the developing world and his work reporting from developing countries has also won him a commendation as International Reporter of the Year and a nomination for the UN Media Peace Prize. His books include: Bad Samaritans: First World Ethics and Third World Debt, The New Politics: Catholic Social Teaching for the 21st century and A Place of Redemption: a Christian approach to punishment and prison. He lives in Manchester.
