Hi everyone,Can I just say a big thakns to Steph for organising this. Lots of fun being able to partake in a book club whilst still in my PJs (it's 9.30am Sunday morning in England! Sitting here with my peanut butter toast and a nice cup of tea) I knew the author was male before I started reading the book so that may have influenced my thinking around this Whilst I thought the beginning of the book was intriguing, and Watson carefully drew you in to the bizarre world of this woman, over time I found I didn't really believe in Christine as a female character. There were places in the book where I found it hard to believe she would act in the way she did (most particularly the awkward scene with Dr Nash where Christine thrusts herself upon him in a deluded moment of passion). That scene more than most really flagged up that this must be a man writing this. At times I also found her to be overly melodramatic, a frustratingly stereotypical helpless and desperate woman. I wanted her to be so much more than she was. I wanted her to be stronger, less accepting. It seemed like everything tied itself up so neatly at the end of the book in a way which was, for me, unsatisfying. As a woman who had experienced everything she had been through I think she would have been more resentful, more shattered.
