    Someone tell me how this does not demonstrate that paying CEOs and our Finance "wizards" boatloads of money does not benefit us one whit? Excellent talk.

    it's great to highlight the importance of intrinsic motivation, and the fact that money isn't everything. Also great to specify other important factors like autonomy and fairness. But this discussion, like so many others, goes too far to the other extreme in minimizing the role of money and other extrinsic rewards-- just like psychologists who have been able to create conditions in the laboratory in which children and college students that extrinsic rewards can undermine intrinsic motivation in children and college students and conclude that paying working adults for high performance is a bad idea. In fact, that experimental finding is not very applicable to the work world in which pay is the norm. Daniel Pink gives early lip service to the importance of money but then says simply that you've got to pay enough to "take it off the table". For most people in most circumstances, good luck with that. It is still a fact that extrinsic rewards motivate. It's just not the only way, and it's got to be done thoughtfully and properly. The issue is that so many bosses and systems reward the wrong things, sometimes at the expense of more important things. And the ultimate motivation comes from both extrinsic and intrinsic rewards, properly aligned.

    Great Talk. Has there been any study about what demotivates people? For example, let's say a company gives me all the things this talk seems to suggest but at the same time the boss hardly works, drives a Ferrari and is constantly taking expensive vacations while his employees all work. How much does a feeling of fairness enter into being de-motivated?
