A Day Out with David Hume in the Borders

21st May 2011

Paxton House, Berwick-upon-Tweed

David Hume has been called ‘the greatest philosopher ever to write in the English language’ (A J Ayer).  If Hume had an agenda, it was to liberate us from the oppression of people who claim for themselves the power of certain knowledge.  In his day, his targets were 'false religions' and 'factions' (political parties).  What would be his targets today?

On the 21st May the RSA will exploring this and other questions at an event to celebrate the tercentenary of Hume's birth.  Led by Dr Fenton Robb FRSA  who has prepared a slide show introducing Hume as Philosopher and Historian, Diplomat and Father of the Scottish Enlightenment.  A stimulating and provoking day of discussion and debate, it will explore Hume's contributions to Scotland and the wider world, and his vital connections to the RSA's 21st Century Enlightenment work.

The event is free to attend, with lunch and refreshments included.  For further information and to register, please visit the dedicated website.
