Matthew Taylor’s Annual Lecture: 21st Century Enlightenment

17th Jun 2010; 17:30

In his annual lecture RSA Chief Executive Matthew Taylor will explore what we mean by the idea of 21st Century Enlightenment and why he thinks the original enlightenment period was not just about new ideas but a more fundamental shift in consciousness. This event will be chaired by David Aaronovitch, writer, broadcaster and columnist for The Times.

Matthew will discuss whether another such shift is required for us to meet the challenges we face today - such as tackling climate change, achieving human security and dignity on a global scale and promoting human fulfilment and well being - and the role that can be played by institutions such as the RSA.  This will be a major topic of work for the Society over coming years, informing the RSA’s mission to be a force for change in the world.

In order for Fellows in Scotland to be involved, there will be a live broadcast of the Lecture at The Melting Pot, Rose Street, Edinburgh. The lecture itself starts at 18.00, but Fellows are welcome to arrive from 17.30 for refreshments and networking.  Twitter will be used in order for Scottish Fellows to ask questions to Matthew, allowing for full participation in Scotland.  Following the lecture, there will be time for debate over the issues raised by the lecture and ideas for future work which arise from it.

Numbers for the event will be limited, so in order to indicate your interest in attending please contact Jamie Cooke, Fellowship Networks Manager.
