This highly successful event, attended by over 450 architects, urban planners, students from the Edinburgh College of Art and RSA Fellows took place at the Royal College of Physicians, 9 Queen Street, Edinburgh on Monday 13 October. It was supported by the Angus Millar trust, the RSA, the Media & Creative Industries Special Interest Group, Anderson Strathern LLP and Historic Scotland.
Professor Daniele Pini (Ferrara) and RSA Council Member Cezary Bednarski (London) were the speakers and Dr Lester Borley CBE, one-time Secretary General of Europa Nostra, chaired the event.
Daniele Pini has a degree in architecture at the Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia (IUAV) in 1969. He is Professor of Urban Planning at the Facoltà di Architettura, Università degli Studi di Ferrara, formerly associate professor at the Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia (IUAV). Guest Lecturer in “Urban planning for historic centres: theory and methods” at the Raymond Lemaire International Conservation Centre, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. He has academic experience from Italy, France, Greece, Sweden, U.K., Germany, Republic of Ireland, Israel, Palestine, Croatia, Algeria, Tunisia, India, USA. In private practice in Venice (1973-1998) and Ferrara (since 1998): consultant to local authorities, public administrations, national and international agencies in the fields of housing, urban heritage conservation, urban development and local planning. He has professional experience in Italy, France, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Malta, Ethiopia, Senegal, Namibia, Vietnam, Bosnia, Bhutan, Lebanon, Jordan, Yemen, United Arab Emirates, Bahrein, Iran, Ecuador, China, Israel, Syria.
Cezary Bednarski was born in Krakow and completed his MSc and Diploma in Architecture in Warsaw. He founded Studio Bednarski in 2001. He is a chartered architect with 28 years experience ranging through a broad range of building types. He is involved in a wide number of organisations, including the RSA Advisory Council, the 21st Century Trust and the RIBA Panel of Competition Assessors. He is a consultant to UNESCO, an advisor to the mayor of Warsaw and was a Rome Scholar. He lectures internationally and publishes on the subject of architecture, design of bridges, transportation, photovoltaics and energy efficient design. He is also involved in projects in East Africa. He has received a number of UK and International Awards, including a Manser Medal.
