Why the Rose?
26th Feb 2011
Barr Church, Stinchar Road, Barr Village, near Girvan, Ayrshire.
Maybe horticulture should be showing the rest of the world what multiculturalism is all about? It's high on the agenda in the remote Scottish village of Barr in Ayrshire.
Gardeners have a combined enthusiasm that knows no boundaries and horticulturalists have one united language (Latin). Plants have been exchanged and passed from one country to another throughout history for the pursuit of more ornamental gardens and tastier fruits and vegetables. A wealth of cultivars have been created and species have been saved from extinction by this cross cultured passion.
How this has occurred over the centuries may best be represented by the rose and explored by the acclaimed horticultural historian, Jennifer Potter, who will be asking the question 'Why the Rose?' on
'Why the Rose?' at the Church in Barr Village, Near Girvan , Ayrshire.
Tickets £4 to include tea and cakes after the event. A selection of roses to be raffled kindly donated by David Austin Roses
Profits to Scotland's Garden Scheme and The British Diabetic Association
