Baltimore, MD: The Saint John's Bible - a Modern Vision through Medieval Methods
21st May 2009
Organized by Anne and Sandy Apgar and hosted by Gary Vikan, Museum Director
On May 21, Fellows viewed pages from the Saint John’s Bible, commissioned by Saint John’s Abbey and University in Collegeville, MN. The project represents more than ten years of collaborative work between artists, scribes and theologians combining ancient and contemporary artistic methods and cross cultural references to inspire people of all spiritual beliefs. Illustrations and illuminations include computer voice-prints and images from the Hubble Space Telescope.
Gary Vikan took the group on a behind the scenes tour of the Walters building and detailed the interesting history of William Walters and Henry Walters and of Mount Vernon Square.
Anne and Sandy Apgar intend to arrange a regular annual visit to the Walters Museum and are also interested in organizing a workshop on urban regeneration to highlight the progress and the problems in the city of Baltimore.
