Newport, RI: Suitability, Simplicity and Proportion
The Restoration of Bellevue House
Friday, April 24, 2009
12 noon - 4 pm
Bellevue House
304 Bellevue Avenue
Newport, RI 02840
Answering the call for increased Fellow engagement, Ron Fleming, FRSA, invited Fellows to visit his historic home in Newport, Rhode Island. Bellevue House, a Colonial Revival mansion built in 1910, was the work of the celebrated architect Ogden Codman Jr. and was the home of some colorful characters, including Edith Wharton, over the years. Ron has now reclaimed it as a family home and a return to "suitability, simplicity and proportion".

Ron has been a Fellow of the RSA for 22 years and is the founder and president of The Townscape Institute, a not-for-profit public interest planning organization founded in 1979. Townscape supports place meaning through conservation and visual enhancement of the built environments, including research publications, public art projects, urban design, and consulting.
The event was coordinated by Arthur and Cele Mark of Narragansett and there were 20 participants. Robin Thompson, deputy chairman of RSA-US, spoke about the RSA’s current work and recent changes initiated to address 21st Century challenges and to make the RSA a more socially engaged organization.
