The Big Society: what happens now?
The RSA is hosting three events, sponsored by The Social Investment Business, to tie in with this year's political party conferences. Each event will give one of the three main parties the opportunity to discuss how society should evolve to cope with emerging challenges.
The first event, 'Should Labour wean itself off big government?', will explore Labour's attitudes towards the Big Society, asking how far the party is committed to the expansion of the voluntary sector and collective endeavour. Speakers will include Tristram Hunt MP and David Halpern, director of research at the Institute for Government.
The second event, 'Hidden wealth: Finding the Big Society in a deprived community', will feature a panel of speakers – including journalist Polly Toynbee and Francis Maude MP – who will discuss what the Big Society means for struggling communities. What support might they need to accelerate their regeneration?
The final event, 'From pavement politics to civic renewal: the Liberal take on the Big Society' will bring together speakers such as Simon Hughes MP, deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats, and journalist Camilla Cavendish. The debate will focus on whether the party's history of grassroots political activism can help it to contribute to Big Society plans, particularly those that involve working in deprived communities.
Audio downloads are be available on the RSA Conferences pages.
