The people's city
The RSA's flagship Citizen Power programme was officially launched in Peterborough in July and research for several of the project strands has now kicked off.
Community engagement is at the heart of the programme, and crucial to this is the ongoing development of a Civic Health Audit. This is designed to help local public services and communities measure and evaluate civic behaviour by working out the capabilities that citizens need to make a positive contribution to community life and identifying where these capabilities are lacking. This will enable funding to be allocated more efficiently at a time when public finances are stretched.
Active involvement in the community is also essential to long-term environmental change, according to a recently published RSA paper, Sustainable Citizenship: supporting communities to grow a greener Peterborough. This argues that the collective challenges we face – from an ageing population to climate change - require a high level of civic involvement and innovation. The RSA's Sustainable Citizenship project will seek to harness the ideas and energy of Peterborough's citizens in tackling local environmental issues.
