Design Directions showcase solutions online
The UK’s leading student competition for social design, the RSA’s
Design Directions, is exhibiting its winning entries online. Design
Directions focuses on the role design can play in response to key
contemporary challenges. The themes forming the basis of this
year’s projects include health, communities and creating a more
inclusive society for older and disabled people.
This year’s scheme included projects developed with NESTA,
the Digital World Research Centre at the University of Surrey,
GlaxoSmithKline and the National Patient Safety Agency. The
winning projects address a wide range of issues, from mental
health and efficient recycling to strategies for giving up smoking
and improving the experience of travelling on local buses for
partially sighted and blind people.
Commenting on this year’s winning work, Sue Hewer, head of
design at the RSA, said: “This year’s scheme demonstrates the
growing interest young designers have in tackling difficult problems.”
