Enduring legacy
We are sad to announce the death of Alice Rebecca Kendall FRSA (1922–2011). Known to her friends as Becky, Kendall was a Life Fellow for more than 40 years and a great supporter of the RSA. She has left the organisation a generous gift in her will that is likely to amount to £60,000.
Having won various prizes at the Edinburgh College of Art, Kendall became a professional artist and exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Academy of Arts, Chelsea Gallery, Guildhall London, the Chenil Gallery and the Paris Salon. Her book, Funny Fishes, combined her love of art, writing and zoology. She wrote articles, poems, illustrations and book reviews for numerous publications, including Edinburgh College Art Magazine, Strand Magazine, Punch, Art and Design, the Mail on Sunday and the Sunday Times.
Kendall was a life governor of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, the founder and first editor of the Federation of British Artists Quarterly (1971–4) and president of the Society of Women Artists (1976).
The RSA relies on the support of our Fellows to ensure that we can continue to make an impact. We are extremely grateful to Becky Kendall for her generous gift, which will enable us to carry out our work in areas such as drugs recovery, education and the arts, helping future generations to fulfil their potential.
Every gift in every will makes a difference, no matter how large or small. We know that making a will is a personal decision and you will want to take care of your family and friends first. But if you would like to leave a gift to the RSA, it can be as little as 1% of your estate and will make an important contribution to our work. As the RSA is a registered charity, your gift will be exempt from inheritance tax. To discuss this possibility further, email Esther McCarthy, head of development, or call her at +44 (0)20 7451 6961.
