In Your Network - Kat Alder FRSA

12 Dec 2011

Kat AlderKat Alder is a new Fellow who runs a communications company specifically for arts organisations.  She talks about what inspires her and her love of the arts:

1) Please give a brief explanation of what it is you do and why?
I set up my company, WildKat PR to apply innovative communications strategies to arts organisations from venues to charities, orchestras, festival, artists and more. I am from a very musical background and have a deep passion for music and the performing arts so I believe everyone should have an opportunity to experience and fall in love with the arts. I run a new company called Culturefull, a website which will allow first-time concert-goers to attend an event with an experienced advocate,  and I hope that through this I can help with breaking down elitist barriers, encouraging people to experience the arts in a non-threatening environment.

2) What did you join the Fellowship for?
I love the RSA, the talks and what it stands for. I have always wanted to be a Fellow and support the causes which the RSA helps, and hope to be supported myself, too. I believe it fulfills a great purpose and I attend a lot of the talks where I have had a chance to meet very interesting people. I see it as a great way to meet people interested in innovative new start ups in the arts, and hope that I will be able to collaborate with people or ask for advice.

3) In what capacity do you think you could contribute to Fellowship/Society?
I'd hope I can offer my experience in cultural PR and marketing, as well as my enthusiasm for the arts. I want to support interesting and innovative projects through my company and collaborate, offering my skills and experiences to other Fellows where I can.

4) What would you change in society given the chance?
My biggest passion is to broaden the audience for performing arts, classical music and opera in particular. I always wanted to advocate the arts and help the sector to develop and engage new and old audiences alike. I want to create more opportunities for free events so more people have the chance to experience concerts and cultural events.  I am aiming toward this with my new Culturefull community - organisations and venues can sign up and offer free tickets, members can then select a field they are interested in and search for an experienced fan of that art form (I call them aficionados), who will go with them to guide them through the event and hopefully explain anything that might be overwhelming or confusing.

5) What recent bit of news have you heard which inspires you?
Berlusconi's resignation is definitely a relief, but I am not sure about inspiring! I recently watched a TED talk: Malcolm Gladwell on Spaghetti Sauce which was a really fascinating and entertaining exploration of the nature of choice. Well worth checking out!

6) What did you learn last week?
Mining the gold for one ring produces 20 tonnes of waste.

7) Tell us about another interesting Fellow you have spoken to.
I have spoken many times to Juliana Farha, she is a brilliant entrepreneur, journalist and creative mind. She has been lovely and an inspiration to me, as well as really encouraging my work and helping my business to grow with her advice and guidance. I enjoy working with her on all of our projects as she is a great person to have on board. I am still quite new to the Fellowship and am, of course, looking forward to meeting many more Fellows.

8) What would you like to connect with Fellows about? Please tell us if there is anything you would like from other Fellows.
I would be interested to collaborate with Fellows who have expertise relevant to my new start up, especially when it comes to advice on business plans; as well as experts in online fields and people who could help me find investors.  I love finding inspiration from other successful people and hearing their stories.  I am always on the look out for advocates of the idea as well as funds to help us launch with a bang!
