Inspiring Zero Food Waste
4 July 2011
In April this year Maria Ana Neves was successful in her bid for Catalyst funding to support the Plan Zheroes food campaign, and is now taking this forward with a number of other RSA Fellows.
As members of London Citizens’ Greener Planet Action Team we were alerted to the fact that the food retail industry sends tonnes of surplus food to landfill every year. At the same time we know that there are people in our communities who struggle to afford good quality food.
Plan Zheroes aims to inspire businesses, such as supermarkets and caterers, to stop throwing surplus food away and to donate it to local charities instead. The Catalyst funding has been used to produce a website, launched this week, which will host an online, interactive map to identify and connect food donors with charities nearby.
The map will be developed over the next few months but take a look at the new website to see all the latest news and details about how you can get involved in this important campaign.
They recently held a focus group meeting, with representatives from Pret a Manger, FareShare, and Foodcycle who have a great track record in diverting surplus food, plus The Passage, The Refugee Council and StreetLytes who currently receive food donations. The aim of the focus group was to use this expertise to make ensure the map contains all the right information and functionality.
In early July they are meeting with the GLA Food Waste Group to explore ways of working together.
Plan Zheroes need support in finding lots of volunteers to help gather information about food donors and receivers for the map. Also, if you have any expertise in online mapping, or have links to the major supermarkets or caterers please get in touch.
