Fellows in Yorkshire: Call to action

RSA Fellows in Yorkshire recently visited the Cottingley Cornerstone Centre.   Its location on the edge of the Bradford Metropolitan District presented both urban and rural challenges, and the need to address pockets of deprivation in an apparently prosperous area.

These challenges have been addressed through the creation of a community centre which co-locates educational, faith, health and community support services, alongside affordable housing.  The project's fortuitous starting point was the vandalisation of a war memorial - an event which came to the attention of the Prince of Wales.  His inspiration, the leadership provided by the Anglican Rector and local councillors, professional fund-raising, a National Lottery grant, partnerships between statutory and voluntary agencies and (most of all perhaps) the commitment of the local community have led to a centre which stands proudly (an iconic design) as a symbol of community solidarity.

How can RSA Fellows help to create ventures of this kind, in a post-recession age when traditional public sector provision may be unsustainable?   Who will initiate and lead them, and how can we cut through bureaucratic barriers?   How can the RSA's skills base support and sustain voluntary efforts, so as to ensure long-term viability?  Visual impact, a sense of place and community overview all seem vital - and are too often neglected:  what can RSA do to give visual expression to community vision?

Ideas and experiences please.  Anything similar in your area?  If not, when shall we start?
