Chattanooga: Catalyst Project in Action
Last week I had the opportunity to see for myself the real difference made by an RSA Catalyst grant. One of the first grants was awarded to Sharon Turner, lead Fellow in the Chattanooga network. Her project brings art lessons to an underserved elementary school in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the United States. The Saturday Arts Academy has introduced more than art to the students; it is attracting positive attention to the school community and building trust, giving the kids a sense of pride and a glimpse of opportunity. Their art work not only hangs throughout the school, adding color and interest where there was none, but it is also on display in a local coffee shop. The children have been invited to visit the famous Hunter Museum and for some this will be their first experience of the “other side” of Chattanooga.
