Recovery

Despite permeating through almost every aspect of the addictions field in recent years, 'recovery' continues to generate heated debates and invites multiple definitions.

While there is no single consensus on a definition, there is general agreement about the core components:

  • that it is a process and not necessarily an end state – this is a personalised process
  • well-being and quality of life - it is a lived experience rather than something diagnosed
  • hope and aspiration
  • some measure of community engagement or citizenship
  • some measure of sobriety (as defined by the individual and may include abstinence, reduced use or medically supported recovery and may be subject to change over time)

Through its projects the RSA has used the lived experience of recovery - generously shared by the many individuals on their recovery journeys – to develop a community model of change that aims to create the vibrant and resilient communities we all need to thrive.
