I was first attracted to the RSA in the late seventies, becoming involved in the “Education for Capability” programme while teaching in inner-city Manchester. Since then I’ve held a number of senior roles in education development in both the public and private sectors, becoming a Fellow in the mid nineties.
I set up my company in 2007, enabling me to continue advising on education, employment and technology trends, working with a diverse range of fee-paying clients including global corporations, universities and local authorities, while assisting not-for-profit organisations for free. My business partner and I (he originally supported my Fellowship application), are now laying foundations for a new business, creating employment in the northwest. We’re also working in a partnership to bring a major programme of European funding to the northwest, specifically for enhancing and increasing employability.
Our philosophy of work balance is simple: “make a difference; have fun; earn enough to sustain the first two.” I know from experience that board membership can be a key part of making that difference. I‘ve explored with Fellows the benefits of associating the RSA brand as a hallmark of excellence with prestigious, pre-funded programmes aligned with RSA objectives and themes. We have ideas to prove that concept within our region.
