Keith Read

Keith ReadKeith Read is currently a Trustee, Non-Executive Director and Vice Chairman of the UK Science Council. He chairs the Science Council HR Sub-Committee, Chief Executives’ Forum and Membership Sub-Committee. He is a Director of Marine South East and a Council Member and Member of the Technical Committee of the RNLI. He is leading the formation of the RSA Fellows Taunton Network.

For ten years he was Chief Executive of the Institute of Marine Engineers, now IMarEST. He was a founding Director of the Engineering and Technology Board, now Engineering UK, and was re-appointed as a Trustee in 2007. For four years he chaired the thirty-five Engineering Institutions Chief Executives’ Committee (G15). Previously he managed the development of investment opportunities in Albania for a small finance company and formed the first investment management company in Croatia.

His early career as an Engineer officer in the Royal Navy included key appointments as: Senior Engineer of the Polaris Submarine HMS REPULSE; Executive Officer of the Clyde Submarine Base at the height of the ‘cold war’; Senior officer of the mine-hunting support Group in the Gulf during the 1988 Iran/Iraq war and British Naval Attaché in Italy and Defence Attaché in Albania throughout the 1990 Bosnia crisis.

Keith Read is an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (HonFIMarEST); a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering & Technology (FIET), the City and Guilds Institute of London (FCGI) and the RSA (FRSA). He attended the Royal College of Defence Studies in 1990 and was appointed CBE in 1997.
