Financial review for 2011
The RSA had total incoming resources of £9.1m in 2011. The major income streams for the year were the Fellowship (£4.3m), the hospitality function (£2m) and income received in support of the events and projects programmes (£1.2m). Total income increased from £8.3m to £9.1m due to a significant one-off backdated VAT recovery.
Meanwhile, the RSA's expenditure for 2011 totalled £8m. The cost of generating the incoming resources above was £3.6m. The RSA invested £4.2m of these funds in charitable activities, including projects, events, the journal, the library and the Fellowship networks. This equates to 76 percent of expenditure, once the cost of income generation has been taken into account.
Overall, the RSA generated a healthy surplus of £1.1m in 2011, which it has retained for future use. More detailed financial statements are available in the RSA Impact Report 2011, which also sets out the RSA’s achievements, impact and future plans.
