Civic Commons
The Civic Commons is a space for a new kind of dialogue, in which active citizens meet with leading thinkers to discuss topical issues and ideas. Think RSA Events meets TED, in a local town hall. Citizens will build their knowledge and confidence on a range of issues, better equipping themselves to shape responses to some of the challenges their communities face. As respected and influential citizens, we hope the inspiration they gain from the Civic Commons will spread amongst their peers.
The Civic Commons has two core objectives:
(a) Build the capacity of citizens to contribute to civic society
(b) Inspire local civic innovation by bringing leading thinkers to Peterborough, discussing their work and providing participants with ideas and projects to develop locally
To date, a broad range of Civic Commons members have participated in various capacity-building events, including an advocacy training workshop and a visit to the House of Commons. At the first Civic Commons session, held on 26 January 2011, Irene Lucas (Director General of Local Government and Regeneration in the Department of Communities and Local Government) and Ben Rogers (formerly of the Prime Minister’s Strategy Unit and author of a recent RSA pamphlet on anti-social behaviour) engaged with participants on the issue of tackling anti-social behaviour in Peterborough. Future events will examine a range of issues, including housing, community inclusion and health.
