Past Projects

Over the years the RSA has initiated a wide range of projects. Many of these continue and are run by other organisations, or have materials connected with them that are still available from the RSA.

The following list is of projects which have concluded within the past five years. For further information about any earlier RSA projects, please contact the Archive. For a broad overview of RSA projects since our foundation 250 years ago, visit our history timeline.

Communities

In the 18th and 19th centuries the RSA worked to improve health and ventilation in factories. It campaigned for better cottages for labourers, buying and repairing an entire village, which was passed on to the National Trust.

Today the RSA is examining the relationship between public policy and the use and abuse of illegal drugs; and working to bring inclusive design and e-accessibility issues to a wide audience.

Education

The RSA pioneered public examinations in the UK, and lobbied for the establishment of a Minister for Education in the 19th century.

Today the RSA's Opening Minds educational initiative aims to change the organisation of learning, making it more relevant to the demands of life in the 21st century.

Enterprise

The creation, protection and utilisation of bright ideas are all crucial to a robust society. The RSA recognised this when it drew attention to the parlous state of the Patent laws in the 19th century. And it continues to recognise it with its project initiatives.

Environment

In 1770 the RSA was already looking for solutions to the problem of smoke emissions. It was also responsible for planting 50 million trees as a reaction to severe deforestation in the previous century.

Two hundred years later, an RSA report examined the use of energy resources, pre-dating modern concerns for the environment. And it still continues with work in this area.

Global citizenship

Modern media coverage takes viewers into the hearts of communities all over the world, bringing them face to face with the predicament of their often less fortunate fellow global citizens. But within these sometimes harrowing broadcasts lie the seeds of hope in the face of adversity - provided we recognise, and act upon, our interconnectedness with the whole world.
