I typed in www.rsa.org.uk - what's happened to the old site?

Congratulations you are in the new RSA site! The RSA site has been enhanced to reflect a more dynamic approach to our web communications. All of the old functionality is still available, as well as some new features which are worth exploring. If you have a page address that you have previously used you will automatically be redirected to its equivalent page in the new site, or will be sent to the site map. Please make a note of the new page address. We hope you enjoy the new experience.

How do I register and login?

If you are a new user click on the 'Register' link on the right hand side of the screen below the main navigation bar. This will direct you to a page for Fellows registration or Guest registration.

When you first register or login you will be asked if you would like the site to remember you when you next return to the site on the same computer. If you say yes, a 'cookie' will be dropped onto your computer which means that the site will automatically recognise you when you next return to the site. This means you will not have to login everytime you return to book for lecture seats or to use the forums.

By default, web browser software allows cookies to be created. If you are having problems with getting the site to remember who you are, let us know and we'll advise you on how to check your settings.

I asked for the site to remember me when I last logged in but I have not been recognised on my current visit. Why?

This is because you have either logged in using a different computer, or you clicked on the 'logout' button in your last visit. By actively logging out in a session, you remove the cookie from your computer.

By default, web browser software allows cookies to be created. If you are having problems with getting the site to remember who you are, let us know and we'll advise you on how to check your settings

How do I remove the cookie from my computer?

Just click on the 'Logout' link on the right hand side of the screen below the main navigation bar. This will remove the cookie from your computer.

By default, web browser software allows cookies to be created. If you are having problems with getting the site to remember who you are, let us know and we'll advise you on how to check your settings

What if I can't remember my password?

Go to the Forgotten Password page. Enter your email address in the box and press 'Submit'. As long as the email address you enter is found in our directory, the corresponding password will be automatically dispatched to the e-mail address you submitted. If you are still having problems, please contact the webmaster.

How do I view the site in a larger font?

Click the 'Text Size: Larger' link in the top bar of all the pages. This will increase the text size.

How do I print out pages?

Click on the print icon in your browser window or click on File: Print in the dropdown menu of your browser window. The print style sheet on this site will automatically print pages in the larger text size and within an A4 page layout.

How do I know if I am viewing the most up-to-date material?

Your browser should automatically check for the latest version of the pages every time you visit them. To ensure you are viewing the very latest content, simply click the refresh or reload button on your browser's toolbar usually located at the top of the browser.

Why doesn't the site display properly on my computer?

In Internet Explorer click 'Refresh' (in Netscape this is called 'Reload') on your browser's toolbar usually located at the top of the browser.

If you are having to scroll left to right to view the content, your screen display is set to a size less than 800 x 600 pixels. To check or change this, in Windows go to 'Control Panel' - 'Display' - 'Settings' - 'Screen size'. If it is any less than 800 x 600, try increasing the size. If you are not able to, please contact your computer manufacturer or IT administrator.

Does the RSA track personal data on this site?

What are PDF and Adobe Acrobat?

'PDF' (for Portable Document Format) files can be viewed with the free Adobe Acrobat Reader. You'll find these types of files throughout the RSA website, as well as on many other websites.

'PDF' is a universal file format that preserves all of the fonts and formatting of the original document, even if you don't have the application that created the document.

'PDF' files are compact and can be shared, viewed, navigated, and printed exactly as intended by anyone with the free Adobe Acrobat Reader. The free Adobe Acrobat PDF reader is downloadable from the Adobe website.

To read the PDF document with a screen reader please link to the Access Adobe website which provides useful tools and resources. Adobe also has a free online conversion tool for PDF.

If you are looking at a page and want to view a document that is formatted in 'PDF', simply click the link to that document. Acrobat Reader 4.0 will automatically open the document in the 'PDF' file format. Other versions of Acrobat Reader may ask you whether you want to "open" or "save" the file first. You can do either, but if you open it, you may not be able to save the file to a location in your computer. An alternative is to click on the link to the 'PDF' with the right-mouse button and choose 'Save As..'.

If you have saved Acrobat Reader files to a location in your computer, you can open them later by opening up Acrobat Reader and using the toolbar to open a file.

You can also use Windows Explorer to find the file and double click on it. This should cause Acrobat Reader 4.0 to automatically open the document.

PDF files and accesibility

To find out how to read a PDF document with a screen reader, go to the Access Adobe website which provides useful tools and resources. Earlier versions of PDF files may not be as accessible.

Go to Access Adobe website

Where do I report a fault or pages that don't work?

Firstly, please ensure that there really is a fault by pressing the 'Refresh' button in Internet Explorer, or 'Reload' in Netscape. If there is still a problem, please advise our Webmaster straight away by sending an email to webmaster@rsa.org.uk . It would be very helpful if you could supply as much information about the error as possible (particularly the browser you are using, your operating system, the text of the error message).
