Keith Read CBE
Keith chairs the RSA Fellows' Taunton network.
Keith Read is a Vice-President of the RNLI and was a council member and member of the Technical Committee of the RNLI. For ten years, he was Chief Executive of the Institute of Marine Engineers, now IMarEST, and is currently a Trustee of the IMarEST Pension Fund.
Keith was a founding Director of the Engineering and Technology Board, now Engineering UK. For four years, he chaired the 35 Engineering Institutions Chief Executives’ Committee (G15). Previously he managed the development of investment opportunities in Albania for a small finance company and formed the first investment management company in Croatia.
Keith is a past Trustee, Non-Executive Director and Vice Chairman of the UK Science Council. He chaired the Science Council HR Sub-Committee, Chief Executives’ Forum and Membership Sub-Committee.
Keith's early career as an Engineer Officer in the Royal Navy included key appointments as: Senior Engineer of the Polaris Submarine HMS REPULSE; Executive Officer of the Clyde Submarine Base at the height of the ‘Cold War’; Senior Officer of the mine-hunting support Group in the Gulf during the 1987 Iran/Iraq war and British Naval Attaché in Italy and Defence Attaché in Albania throughout the 1990s' Bosnian crisis.
Keith is an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (HonFIMarEST); a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering & Technology (FIET), the City and Guilds Institute of London (FCGI) and the RSA (FRSA). He attended the Royal College of Defence Studies in 1990 and was appointed CBE in 1997.
