On 11th June 200 RSA Student Design Awards (SDA) finalists, judges, industry partners and friends filled the RSA House in London to celebrate the 2015 awards and the power of design for social impact.
The evening kicked off in the RSA's famous Great Room, where leading international industrial designer and two-time SDA award winner Paul Priestman took the stage to deliver the keynote address. Paul captivated the audience, sharing his personal journey as a designer - from tinkering with lawnmowers as a kid and working on RSA briefs as a student, to later founding PriestmanGoode and designing future London tubes, high speed trains and space capsules. Sevra Davis, Director of the SDAs, chaired an audience Q&A with Paul and she also shared some SDA highlights from the past year - including the publication of our 90th anniversary 'Design for Good' report, and the launch of the first ever 'Moving Pictures' animation brief using audio from the RSA's renowned public events programme.
Master of the Royal Designers for Industry (RDI) Malcolm Garrett then opened the presentation of the 2015 awards, with each of the 28 winners receiving their physical 'stepping stone' award (designed by RDI Robin Levien) on stage as their projects lit up the big screen to rapturous applause. All of the winning projects can be viewed on our online Showcase, and there's a playlist of the winning Moving Pictures animations on the RSA's YouTube channel.
Formal proceedings over and awards in tow, finalists and guests headed downstairs to the RSA's Benjamin Franklin room for drinks, and even after the RSA closed its doors, the excitement and celebrations continued into the small hours at a pub nearby.
The 2015 awards event brought the 2014-15 RSA Student Design Awards programme to a close, so now we're full steam ahead preparing for the September launch of our 2015/16 Awards. The RSA briefs will be available to download from our website from 1 st September, and we are hosting a Tutor Briefing Day + Design Lecture at the RSA on Wednesday 23rd September – save the date, and sign up to our newsletter via our home page to receive event updates and invitations from us.
For now, one more huge congratulations to all of the 2015 RSA Student Design Awards winners and finalists, and big thank you to all of the industry partners, judges, university tutors and most importantly the SDA participants who have made this year's awards a roaring success.
