The focus on 'satisfactory' schools seems to be building, with the Prime Minister's recent comments on 'coasting schools', and Ofsted highlighting the number of schools 'stuck' at Satisfactory in their annual report. Our collaboration with Ofsted to explore the data on 'satisfactory' schools has stimulated some of this interest, although our focus has been somewhat more specific. As well as mapping the current location and improvement trends for 'satisfactory' schools, we have analysed pupil demographics, with a focus on the issues of social justice and equality of opportunity (ie exploring whether kids from disadvantaged backgrounds are concentrated in poorer quality schools). We also analysed inspection reports to draw out the characteristics these schools - what makes them 'satisfactory'. Our findings - and our (pretty radical) recommendations - will be released in a full report in early December. Watch this space!
