Bruce Katz, vice president of the Brookings Institution, describes how innovation in cities and metropolitan areas is driving social, economic and political change on a national scale.

In the face of federal gridlock, economic stagnation and fiscal turmoil, power in the US is shifting away from Washington and toward major cities and metropolitan areas. Innovative urban business and community leaders are seizing the opportunity to collaborate and drive change, investing in infrastructure, making manufacturing a priority, linking small businesses to global markets, and training workers for the skills they need.

Bruce Katz, founding director of the Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program describes this sea change away from centralised government, showcasing examples of how ground-up innovations are solving tough problems and revamping US economic relationships with the world.

RSA chief executive Matthew Taylor will chair the event and discuss further with Bruce Katz, examples of transformative city region initiatives in the UK.

Bruce J Katz is a vice president at the Brookings Institution and founding director of the Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program. Bruce is co-author (with Jennifer Bradley) of The Metropolitan Revolution: How Cities and Metros are Fixing our Broken Politics and Fragile Economy (Brookings Press, 2013)
