The RSA’s Food, Farming and Countryside Commission is an ambitious two-year programme of inquiry, launching in November 2017.

Against a backdrop of change and uncertainty, this Commission is intended to help secure the future of safe, sustainable food and farming systems in the UK and to protect national environmental assets of vital economic, social and cultural importance, for now and for future generations.

Wales has shown strong leadership in its approach to some of the complex challenges facing our food and farming systems. The Wellbeing of Future Generations Act is the first of its kind in the world and the National Assembly has already started important discussions with the Rethinking Food in Wales consultation. The RSA’s Commission is keen to add further value to these debates and explore broader issues within a Welsh context.

88 per cent of the land in Wales is dedicated to agriculture, but with one in 14 species in Wales at risk of disappearing, what changes need to be made to ensure Wales’s nature, countryside and communities thrive alongside one another?

59 per cent of the Welsh population are overweight or obese - how can we explore the connections between access to the countryside, the food we consume and our health? Over 4 per cent of the Welsh working population are employed in agriculture compared to just 1 per cent in England, but what role will Wales play in the Brexit negotiations?

Join the Food, Farming and Countryside Commission for an RSA Watch event in Cardiff as we seek to explore what these issues mean for Wales. We will begin with filmed highlights from the Commission’s launch debate and will go on to discuss the key ideas and issues with local thinkers and doers. The event will be hosted by Sue Pritchard, Director of the Food, Farming and Countryside Commission.

Join us as we seek to grow a new vision for the future of our food, farming and countryside.
