Local Authorities across the UK are needing to look to new ways of managing community assets as the available resources from central government become more constrained.
While this is generating many challenges for these authorities, it also offers social enterprises and charities the opportunity to develop and deliver community assets in innovative ways. This can include training, parks, local services, or community engagement.
The Brix at St Matthews is a non-religious community charity based in an historic church building in central Brixton in south London. We run the building for the benefit of the local community and have a range of commercial and community tenants. The parkland surrounding the building is called the Peace Garden and the Brix is discussing with LB Lambeth about assuming management of the park and developing new community uses in the space. This is an example of this proposed community transfer of assets.
During the evening we will be hearing from a range of stakeholders who have views or experience on community transfers. We are also offering local RSA Fellows the opportunity to describe comparable projects that they may be running.
Finally, we would like to use the evening as an opportunity to gather local RSA Fellows in the Lambeth/ Southwark/ Wandsworth areas to meet each other as well as to see the community facilities at The Brix at St Matthews.
