This seminar will look at how we can best support children and families in crisis in order to ensure that vulnerable children do not grow up to be the disadvantaged adults of the future.
'Surrey Uncovered', a report by the Community Foundation for Surrey, reveals that there are 21,000 lone parents in the county, a 22% increase over a ten year period. There are 1,000 families facing multiple problems and a 20% rise in the number of vulnerable children who need social care support. Domestic violence, the mental health of parents and carers, housing and educational problems affect children who are on a Child Protection Plan.
What is the social impact of family breakdown and these other factors?
What assistance and services can be offered to children and adults who are affected by the adverse economic and social consequences, inequality and downward social mobility which can come from the breakdown of the family?
How can we sustain community well-being and help to ensure that there are positive outcomes for the young people affected?
Dermot Brady, Honorary Senior Lecturer in Social Work at Kingston University, and Rehabilitation Services Development Manager at London Probation Trust, and Clare Francis, Relate West Surrey Counsellor and Trainer will debate the issues and discuss their insights with us. Dermot devised and runs the 'Caring Dads' programme for London Probation and has worked extensively in a child protection context. Clare Francis works with couples, families, young people and individuals and has a particular specialism in helping parents of children with challenging behaviour.
