The rapid path of change in education in Wales, from devolution to the Donaldson Review and beyond.
“Whatever next?” will provide an opportunity for a candid discussion about the education system in Wales, with regards to where we are and where we need to go. This workshop will include a critical review of education in Wales since devolution by Gareth Evans. Gareth Evans is an author and education editor of the Western Mail, whose outspoken writings have been much appreciated. His review will reflect deteriorating PISA test results and a gap in GCSE performance.
The challenges of working towards change in Wales will be set out by Dr Philip Dixon, the director of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, whose members are charged with implementing the proposed changes. The lessons for Wales found in other countries' actions will be discussed by Professor David Reynolds of Southampton University, who, for many years, has been following and advising governments on education in his native Wales, where he also lives.
For RSACymru, this is the first of a series of events and seminars exploring the impact of the Creative Learning, Donaldson and Furlong reports, involving RSA Fellows and practitioners in the creative and education fields.
Ten minutes for questions will be allowed after each speaker and there will be a panel question time at the end. Governors from Wales will be in attendance during the event to enable people interested in becoming governors to get full information on the role.
We are grateful for the generous support from Cardiff Metropolitan University towards the cost of this event.
