Transition is central to human survival and development. In all human lives, change must come. This includes both positive and negative events in personal, professional, social, political, environmental, national and international contexts. How we deal with these changes or transitions is a vital consideration for our survival and our ability to thrive as individuals, families and societies. Our natural abilities to cope are often under-estimated and rarely understood.
Chartered Occupational Psychologist Dai Williams will lead this workshop for us. His interest in “transition psychology” started from meeting US Peace Corps volunteers who were experiencing culture shock in Uganda in the 1970s. Since the 1970s, Dai has explored the applications of transition theory and practice to commercial and political organisations and events, to communities suffering from mass trauma or change and in a military setting for ex-service personnel. He has worked with over 700 clients in 'Eos Life-work'; his planning and crisis support consultancy.
The workshop will consider the personal transitions experienced in our lives and those of our relatives, friends or colleagues and will look at the stages people go through as they enter a period of major crisis or life change and the phases and adjustments they go through as they experience shock, adjustment, emotional and psychological phases and eventual recovery. Dai will then explore the application of the transition psychology model to the public sphere, considering what happens when there is mass transition in organisations, communities and governments.
The workshop will be of great interest to you if you work in counselling, therapy, the caring professions, organisational consultancy, public services and other settings in which you need to help others to cope with change. It will also be of interest to Fellows who may be experiencing change, for example in their careers or families.
Fellows can test some of the transition propositions using their own recent experiences in two short exercises which are available to download below. These are for personal reference and reflection.
