Many disabled people achieve success in life in spite of the additional societal barriers they may face. Can this tell us something new about resilience?
There has been a backlash against what many are calling 'inspiration porn', meaning the use of disabled people as inspiring achievers. Tom Shakespeare, Professor of Disability Research at Norwich Medical School, University of East Anglia, will ask how we should think about people who overcome the odds and achieve success.
Tom will draw on international perspectives from his current research which explores the lives of successful disabled people in Africa.
Cafe Culturel is an informal, café-style, thoughtful public discussion. Events are open to all, no prior knowledge needed, just a like-minded desire for convivial and lively banter in an inclusive, welcoming setting.

We encourage you to arrive from 6.30pm to enjoy a drink and meet other attendees before the talk starts at 7pm. The speaker talks for around 30 minutes, followed by open discussion and debate, with a short break at 8pm to refill glasses; the discussion then resumes until 9pm. There will be an opportunity for networking after the talk.
The event is free to attend. Donations are welcome to help Cafe Culture North East continue their work.
Venue
Please note there is no parking directly outside the venue on Palace Green for participants. There are a limited number of spaces available for disabled parking. Anyone with a blue badge requiring disabled parking, email cafeculturene@gmail.com with your name and registration number within 5 days of the event and we will confirm space availability.
