How has the rise of populism affected both the public opinion and landscape of overseas development assistance?

Looking at one of the central themes of recent politics both in the UK and many other parts of the world, this RSA International Development Network event will consider the apparent shift from a global mindset to a more nationalist one, a position which comes into conflict with the idea of overseas development assistance: international aid.

Bringing together people with contrasting perspectives on the issue, the event will invite the audience to drive a debate around the merits of aid. The discussion will consider how aid is best delivered and the importance of aid to the UK, as a nation and as individuals.

If you have any questions or you’d like to speak as part of the debate, please contact Network Lead Adam Boxer FRSA with a short biography and your position on this topic: [email protected].

If you have any access requirements or require any reasonable adjustments, please let the team know: [email protected].

Please note the RSA is politically neutral and welcomes a range of ideas and perspectives on this topic. All are welcome to this discussion and the subsequent networking session.

Location: The Romney Room, The RSA, 8 John Adam Street, London WC2N 6EZ

About this network

With the launch of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) it is now more than ever that a more connected and coordinated approach to solving the world's biggest challenges is needed. In the true spirit of SDG 17 the International Development Network is about fostering collaboration. Collaboration through discussion, ideation, and practice.

The network is open to anyone with an interest, vested or otherwise, in the development of our global neighbours and communities.

The primary aim is to create a supportive environment for the sharing of ideas, best practice, and outside-the-box thoughts on how best to create sustainable positive impact. The secondary focus is to foster cross-sector relationships and transfers of knowledge.
